☆ Florence’s famed Ponte Vecchio to be restored to former glory with two-year makeover

CNN —In the seven centuries since the Ponte Vecchio was first built in Florence, Italy, the bridge has watched the city changing around it, surviving floods, fires and the Nazi invasion in World War II. Now, the famed bridge itself is getting a two-year makeover, at the cost of about €2 million, to restore it to its former glory, the city of Florence and the Marchesi Antinorini winemakers announced on Wednesday. “This is a historic project because Ponte Vecchio has never had a restoration intervention of this technical complexity,” Florence’s mayor Dario Nardella told reporters on Thursday. Such is the Ponte Vecchio’s significance that it was the only bridge across the Arno River spared by the retreating German army towards the end of World War II. Previous replacement joints will be upgraded, the stone itself will be strengthened and the footpath’s stone will be restored too.

The “Grey's Anatomy” star and race car driver takes the mantle from “Captain America” star Chris Evans, who was 2022's selection. "I’ve always been the bridesmaid!” Dempsey, 57, told the magazine about his initial reaction. Dempsey achieved heartthrob status as Dr. Derek Shepherd — nicknamed “McDreamy” — on “Grey's Anatomy,” appearing in more than 250 episodes. Other Sexiest Man Alive recipients include Michael B. Dempsey was revealed to be the new Sexiest Man Alive on Tuesday’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” after audience members asked Dempsey, whose voice and face were concealed, questions to help narrow down his identity. “I’m just happy they made a decision and that it was me this year,” Dempsey told Kimmel. Dempsey takes on the title from Chris Evans, who was crowned the 2022 Sexiest Man Alive. MILAN HAS A GRITTY GLAMOUR that doesn’t endear itself to every visitor, but on my first visit I was surprised how much I liked it. From the imposing, imperial stone behemoth of Milano Centrale train station, I walked down the dusty, grand streets straight to the Villa Necchi Campiglio, a 1930s house and walled garden set like an emerald in the heart of Milan. I’d wanted to go ever since I saw Luca Guadagnino’s 2009 film “I Am Love,” in which the house served as both the set and soul of the story, a restrained but sumptuous vision of Italian architecture.
